Centipede Atari 2600 game

Centipede is a classic arcade game that was also released for the Atari 2600 console in 1982. It was developed by Atari, Inc. and became one of the most popular and influential games of its time.

Instructions

In Centipede, the player controls a small ship at the bottom of the screen, moving horizontally to shoot and destroy a centipede that is descending from the top. The centipede moves in a zigzag pattern and leaves mushrooms in its wake. The player's objective is to shoot and break apart the centipede while avoiding collisions with it or any other enemies that appear on the screen.

As the centipede is shot, the remaining segments become shorter and move faster, making the game more challenging. Additionally, spiders, fleas, and other creatures periodically appear to hinder the player's progress. The player can earn extra points by shooting these creatures as well.

The game continues until the player loses all their lives or successfully clears the screen of centipedes. Centipede for the Atari 2600 was praised for its addictive gameplay and faithful adaptation of the arcade original, making it one of the console's standout titles.
