Space_Ranger_1987_Mastertronic Amiga game

This Defender-inspired game, Space Ranger, is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, it's hard to ignore its rather lackluster appearance – the graphics are nothing to write home about, and the overall aesthetic feels a bit sad and ugly. The weirdo graphics and weak sound design don't exactly elevate the experience either. However, it does have one standout feature: the parallax scrolling is surprisingly well-executed, adding a layer of depth to the otherwise uninspiring visuals.

Environmentally conscious and Defender-inspired, Space Ranger from MASTERTRONIC manages to infuse a quirky ecological twist into the gameplay. Players find themselves flying around levels, preventing aliens from abducting cute animals, which adds an interesting twist to the classic formula. However, in terms of gameplay, it falls short of capturing the magic of the classic Defender. While it's technically playable and offers some entertainment value, it lacks the depth and excitement that made Defender such a fantastic experience.

Navigating through the Beta Crucis system as a Space Environmental Protection Ranger, armed with a laser pistol and an endless supply of nets, the capturing of critters is easier said than done. Some Beta Crucians are sluggish and earthbound, while others zip around erratically, making the capturing process a frustrating endeavor. Moreover, the radar display at the bottom of the screen not only indicates the creatures you must save but also reveals the slaves transporting them to the Morgdanian transporter, adding an extra layer of challenge.

Some players might find enjoyment in its goofy charm and the ability to explore the entire level without worrying about boundaries. And indeed, there are those who appreciate its simplicity and find it to be a decent enough clone of Defender. However, for many, it's just an average game offering average fun – not terrible by any means, but far from exceptional.
