Pengo Atari Atari 5200 game

Pengo (1983) – Classic Atari 5200 Maze Arcade Game

Pengo is a classic maze and action-puzzle game that puts you in control of a brave red penguin navigating a frozen maze filled with dangerous enemies. In this Atari 5200 version, your mission is to outsmart the Sno-Bees, slide giant ice blocks to crush them, and collect bonus points by arranging special diamond blocks. Originally introduced in arcades in 1982, Pengo arrived on the Atari 5200 in 1983, bringing its fast-paced maze challenges to the home console.

Instructions

Outsmart the Sno-Bees

Take control of Pengo and move through a maze made of ice blocks. Your enemies, known as Sno-Bees, will chase you through the frozen playfield and try to catch you. Instead of relying on direct attacks, you must use the environment to your advantage.

Push ice blocks into the Sno-Bees to crush them, or use clever positioning to trap multiple enemies with a single move. Some ice blocks contain Sno-Bee eggs that can hatch as a round progresses, so acting quickly and remembering where danger may appear can make a big difference.

Push Ice Blocks and Solve the Maze

The main challenge in Pengo for Atari 5200 is learning how to manipulate the ice blocks. Kick a block forward to send it sliding across the maze, crushing any enemies in its path. You can also break certain blocks when they are trapped against a wall or another block, opening up new routes and creating opportunities to defeat your opponents.

The maze changes as you clear blocks and move around the playfield. Planning each move is essential: a well-timed push can eliminate several Sno-Bees, while a careless move can leave Pengo vulnerable to attack.

Line Up the Diamond Blocks for Bonus Points

Three special diamond blocks appear in each maze. These blocks cannot be destroyed, but you can move the surrounding ice to bring them together horizontally or vertically. Aligning all three earns a substantial score bonus and briefly freezes nearby Sno-Bees, giving you an opportunity to attack or escape.

You can also use the vibrating walls to temporarily stun enemies near the edge of the playfield. Combining this ability with strategic block pushes helps you survive tougher rounds and achieve higher scores.

Choose Your Difficulty and Play Solo or With a Friend

The Atari 5200 version includes three skill levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. The difficulty affects how many Sno-Bees can appear at once and how many lives you receive at the start. Beginner mode gives you more room to learn the mechanics, while Advanced mode demands faster decisions and more careful movement.

Pengo also supports two-player play, with players taking turns after a life is lost. Whether you're learning the maze or competing for a high score, every round rewards quick reactions, smart positioning, and effective use of the ice blocks.

How to Play Pengo on Atari 5200

Use the joystick to move Pengo up, down, left, and right through the maze. Press a lower fire button to kick or break ice blocks, or to make a nearby wall vibrate and stun Sno-Bees. The goal is to eliminate the enemies before they catch you, while using the diamond blocks to earn extra points.

Each round ends when the Sno-Bees are eliminated or the final enemy escapes. The game ends when you lose your last life, so make every move count.
